LANE ONE : legacy in motion

Lane One was developed to explore the intersection of athletic legacy, cultural stewardship, and community infrastructure in Chicago.

The film documents the leadership, vision, and collective effort behind a transformative indoor track & field facility, positioning the space not merely as a building, but as civic infrastructure designed to expand access and preserve athletic heritage. The project culminated in a curated premiere at Chicago’s historic Davis Theatre, convening community leaders, institutional partners, and athletic stakeholders.

NARRATIVE CHALLENGE

The story required navigating multiple layer simultaneously:

  • Intergenerational athletic legacy

  • Executive leadership vision

  • Community and stakeholder investment

  • Archival material spanning decades

  • Live-event integration within an active training facility

Without narrative discipline, the film risked becoming either a commemorative highlight reel or a fragmented collection of interviews.

CINEMATIC APPROACH

We approached Lane One as narrative infrastructure, not a standalone film. The visual language was built on contrast: heritage and present day, intimacy and scale, preparation and permanence.

We opened with tactile symbolism, incorporated archival track spikes resting on the lane, grounding the audience in athletics inheritance before introducing contemporary athletes in quiet preparation. These observational moments established the thesis: greatness is collective, built through mentorship, access, and environment.

Executive interviews were intentionally framed within the architecture of the facility itself. Rather that isolating leadership in neutral spaces, we positioned them inside the ecosystem they helped build, steel beams overhead, lanes active in the background, reinforcing that vision is embedded in place.

Our production priorities included:

  • Controlled depth of field to create emotional focus

  • Naturalistic lighting within institutional environments

  • Measured camera movement reflecting athletic discipline

  • Seamless archival integration to establish continuity

The edit moved between three narrative layers:

  1. Personal — athlete preparation and lived experience

  2. Institutional — leadership intent and long-term strategy

  3. Civic — Chicago’s broader track & field ecosystem

The premiere execution was designed as an extension of the narrative strategy. The screening functioned as a convening moment, aligning stakeholders, honoring legacy, and reinforcing the film’s institutional relevance in a live setting.

Organizational Impact

Lane One now functions as a case study reflecting JMC Studios capacity to steward complex, multi-voice narratives. The success of the project was not measured by premiere attendance alone, but by its ability to strengthen alignment across athletes, leadership, and community partners.
